Blinded in one eye in a child­hood ac­ci­dent, Stain­er served as chor­ist­er at St. Paul’s, and or­gan­ist at the Coll­ege of St. Mi­chael, Ten­bury, and Christ Church, Ox­ford. He found­ed the Ox­ford Phil­har­mon­ic So­ci­e­ty in 1866, was knight­ed in 1888, and be­came a pro­fes­sor of mu­sic at Ox­ford in 1889. His works in­clude:
