Af­ter stu­dy­ing his­to­ry at High­bu­ry Coll­ege, Lon­don, Con­der be­came co-pas­tor of High Wyc­ombe Con­gre­ga­tion­al Church in 1845. In 1849, he suc­ceed­ed Win­ter Ham­il­ton as min­is­ter of Bel­grave Cha­pel in Leeds, Eng­land. He af­ter­ward moved to Cheet­ham Hill, Man­ches­ter, in 1864, and Queen’s Road, For­est Hill, Lon­don, in 1870. While in Leeds, he helped com­pile the Leeds Hymn Book in 1853; he pub­lished an ap­pen­dix to it in 1874.
