Armistead at­tended the Roy­al Man­ches­ter Coll­ege of Mu­sic; Ow­en’s Coll­ege, Man­ches­ter, Eng­land; and Ox­ford Un­i­ver­si­ty (MusD). He played the organ at the Wes­ley­an Church, Brier­feld, Eng­land; the Wes­ley­an Church in Burn­ley (1908); and Ho­ly Trin­i­ty Church, Burn­ley (1909). He was a Fel­low of the Roy­al Coll­ege of Org­an­ists, As­so­ci­ate of the Roy­al Coll­ege of Mu­sic, and As­so­ci­ate of the Roy­al Man­ches­ter Coll­ege of Mu­sic.
