Daughter of Landgrave Georg II of Hessen-Darmstadt, Anna was carefully educated. In 1657 she was elected Pröbstin of the Lutheran Fürsten-Töchter-Stift at Quedlinburg; she became Abbess there in 1680. Her hymns, contemplations on the union of the soul with Christ, in the spirit of the Canticles, mostly appeared in her devotional work:
