Amps was ed­u­cat­ed at Pe­ter­house, Cam­bridge (BA 1858, MA 1862). He played the or­gan at the Coll­ege for some time, and at King’s Coll­ege (1855-76) and Christ Coll­ege. He con­duc­ted the CUMS for ma­ny years, and was known as a com­pos­er of pi­a­no­for­te so­na­tas and part songs.
